No. You can always use the CHAT option adequately, but it helps considerably if you want to use voice or video comms. If you use a NON-BROADBAND connection, you will get a lot of distortion, and the messages across sound very wierd, and timewise it takes forever to deliver the voice message. Try it anyway, it's fun. People sound like they are drunk! and you answer but they hear you a few seconds later. OK for emergency, fun or if you don't have any other option.

If you have a very good dial-up connection you can get away with using it. For an idea of how it will sound and work picture the old CB radios when you were on the edge of their range - pretty lousy but workable.
