Probably by train. I went from St. Helens to Oxford on an Open Ended Return ticket a couple of weeks ago for about £51. There is the coach option which is a lot cheaper, but only if you want to spend hours travelling! Have you also thought about car rental? Assuming you can drive that is!

I would google travel sites. Travelocity and Priceline all have discounted trips and tickets.
