They all do that. Did you know they are fin nippers? They do not go after a fish if it is looking at them, they like to sneak up behind the fish....Kinda lame! So they are really not as cool as we all thought they were.

Pirahnas are ambush predators that are not comfortable in the open or in bright light. They prefer to wait until a prey fish is not paying attention to make their attack. Mostly they hide in the plants and zip out to grab a meal. If you do not have a bunch of plants for him to hide in he is waiting for the cover of darkness to hunt. Add some bushy plants and you will probably see a big difference in his actions.

An interesting bit of info is that the oscar, a species that shares the same habitat in South America as the pirahna, has developed a spot called an "eye spot" on the anterior (rear) part of their bodies over time that makes predators think they are being watched even though the oscar is looking the other way. Many ambush predators will not attack their prey if they think they are being watched.

Another interesting tidbit is that pirahna are a species of tetra. Rather large, but nonetheless, tetras.
