My computer has 98SE. I was told I need to remove all programs, do a re-install of Windows 98SE, Why??

My computer has slowed alittle, but not annoying. I was told I had to remove all programs and do a re-install of Windows 98SE. My computer isn't able to take XP. Why do I need to do a 'clean' re-install?

Sometimes computers become infected with spyware, malware, viruses, etc. While antivirus software does a relatively good job of stopping or removing these infections they are not 100% effective. Also, operating systems often becomes unstable when extreme demands are imposed, or those demands might be cummulative over several years. If you are skilled you can tweak that operating system and refresh it. However, if you dont have that level of skill, and most people don't, a fresh installation of the operating system is essential for increase performance. Sometimes you are unlikely to notice the lethargic speed at with your computer work because of the method of progression. You become acclimated to the pace. However, after a fresh installation, that puppy begins to bark again like a pitbull.

Whoever told you that is full of BS! I would start by running some spyware scans, the norton spyware scan in the yahoo toolbar works pretty good. I would also try a defrag. You might also run msconfig and shut down some of the processes that are running on startup.

Hi. You don't. It's your computer! If you are happy with it then just keep on truckin'. It is a good idea to download some malware programs to remove adware and spyware. ' AdAware ' and ' Spybot ' are both free and pretty good. Run them and get rid of whatever they find and things may speed up.

if possible,you can purchase windows 2000 or Vista and install if It won't except XP
