If you need to write about shale, here are some sites to help you get started:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shale
http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/other/oil_shale/
http://minerals.cr.usgs.gov/projects/mancos_shale/index.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgess_shale

Almost all areas with sedimentary rocks have some shale layers. If you want to find where there is shale near you, search for geologic maps of your county, state, or province.

If you need some shale pieces, a garden shop with garden and patio stones might have some.

You can find shale in tons of places. Shale is a sedimentary rock produced by compaction of mud and clay.

shales are common in basins, shelves, deltas, meandering rivers, flood plains, etc.

other than that there is no 1 place to get it

Estonia, Russia, Brazil, and China currently mine oil shale, however production is declining due to economic and environmental factors.
