i don't think they would want anything unique if their situation is that desperate - they want practical and functional - give them the biggest gift voucher you can for walmart so they can buy the essentials that they need.
you could also take a truck over to the salvation army and pick up a bunch of furniture and household / kitchen items for them. thank you for caring.

Although a "unique" gift may be appreciated in other situations, it is not necessary in this situation. The best gift you would be giving to this family is your love and caring. You should get them a gift card to a large store such as Walmart, in order for them to start replacing items that are essentials.
If they do not have a place to live, possibly you could help them find a place in your area by inquiring through local churches and help agencies. Thank you for being a concerned person. God bless all of you as you help each other.
