What would you consider to be the best movie about hippies?

Not an easy answer here---the movie-making community did the best it could to ignore the counterculture when it was happening, and most of the dramatic films about it were made at least a decade later--of those, "The Secaucus Seven" by John Sayles came closest to remembering what it was like. "Hair", though full of stereotypes and cliches, is okay to watch. "Alice's Restaurant" can also give you some idea, but it tends to emphasize the bleaker aspects of the time, and ignores a lot of the positive aspects of the counterculture. Watch it with reservations.
For the best look at the times made during the times, you'll have to watch "Woodstock" and "Monterey Pop"--concert films, yes, but documentaries as well.

I wouldn't exactly called it a "hippie movie", but Easy Rider puts emphasis on the stereotypes of the 1960's.

Dazed and Confused was not about hippies. It was about high school kids in the mid-70s.

Dazed and Confused was good. (young hippies I'd say)

Forrest Gump had some hippy parts.

"Forrest Gump" was pretty good. The best would definitely be "Hair."
