I have installed a new hard drive as the Master and I installed my crashed hard drive as the Slave. I booted up the computer and looked under My Computer hoping to see the other hard drive, but it was not showing up. As the computer was booting up the old drive was making noise and it seemed like the internal parts were moving.

How do I get my computer to recognize the Slave drive(I do have the jumpers set correctly)???

Hey Jman, Once a drive crashes it may not be able to be used again. I have seen this happen alot. However there are free tools you can get from the drives manufacturers site called disk wizards and ssuch, that may help you recover some of the data, it may not as well. One problem I face a lot on drives is that the MBR sector "0" is the area that goes bad. This area tells the rest of the drive how to wprk, and can only be restore using the manufacturer's disk repair tools. Hope this helps

unfortunately the noises you are probably hearing is a broken drive and not one that is turning on properly. the internals to the disk are probably broken. Usually the arm of the disk reader is broken, and the more and more u try to access the disk, the more damage you are doing. there are companies that specialize in this, but that will cost thousands of dollars to retrieve the data.

If it is not the mechanics of the drive and you want to play with the jumpers, suggest you make sure you have it cabled right and set both drives to cable select, then the master/slave will work. You other choice is to put the dead disk in a USB caddie and see if it boots up that way.

But I am betting that the drive is phsyically damaged on the inside of the disk.

You might not be able to get the computer to recognize the Damaged Hard Drive.

At least right away.

If the HD is making clicking noises, like if something is moving around...you may not be able to access the Hard Drive and make windows recognise it.

Just wait it out for a few days or hours...Disconect the HD (slave) and wait a few days before reconecting it back...You might have some luck..

the Platters of the disk might be F@# up.

The above has worked for me a few times..not all the time.

You answered your question, good Sir. You have a failed hard drive. Regardless of whether or not you hear motion coming from the drive what is more important is that the operating system can no longer communicate with that peripheral. Dead, Done, Kaput. As Ray Charles said,"ah mean like nothing."

When the computer starts, do the plates turn?

Hearing noises is not good.
If you cant see it.. not good.

I think its toast. Just toss it in the trash. Make a backup next time!

If you installed a new hard drive as your master, then remove your old hard drive. if it crashed then it is non functioning.
