Hi bet he has a mobile phone why not get him a phone card so you can keep in touch I guess its hard as you don't want to come across kind of too friendly if you know what I mean and please don't take it the wrong way, I really do no what you mean my son has a mate they have been together since kindy and they do everything together so I know what you mean about your best mate, maybe have one of those crazy picture's taken together so he can have a good laugh when he looks at it and remember's all the great time's you shared growing up do you have one! you can all way's tell him its to throw dart's at when he's bored so you don't come across too soppy then he wont get embarrassed when you give it to him, well I hope I HELPED good luck with your school year and cheer up he's only in another state and Aussie's do get around and just think you will have free accommodation when you go a visiting.

If u truely want to give him the best gift to him then buy a gold chain if u can afford and put a small photo of urs in the locket of the chain.And whenever he sees the chain he'll remember u.
Or just give him a photo of u both standin together or enjoyin somethin together and when if sees those photos in his future he'll remember those precious moments which he spent with u.
Or just give him somethin which u love very much like a watch or sumthin like that and tell him the reason u r givin it to him.And he'll always remember u.And he'll tell others whom he meets in the future that this was one my best friends who gave his favourite thing away to me as a gift.And he'll tell it proudly.

the best gift u can give is ,,buy a diary and write ur feelings abt him in it,,write wht evru want to say to him in it.....if u have any spl day to remember write abt it .
