I saw in a nature show of some kind that if done in the extreme that it indicates the animal's slow mental breakdown. It is totally against their nature to be confined, and no matter how nice the enclosure is, some of them simply can't or refuse to adjust. It's really sad.

In the wild elephants rarely stand still. they are always roaming in search of pastures and water. The ones in the zoo are confined in a very small area and this is very restrictive to them. This causes them to change their normal behaviour and they stand still. Due to their weight, they have to rock so as to shift and distribute the weight among the feet to avoid straining them. This happens in all animals....including humans. Try standing still for a long while and see
