depends on how much you van is worth ..and the amount of miles on the engine. A head can be bought from a salvage yard but you don't always get a good one... a new "complete" head installed can be upwards of $700....depending on vehicle type and where you take it...don't go to a car dealer!

There is no way to know, absolutely, that a head is "cracked" until it is removed and inspected. Some mechanics will diagnose a "cracked head" when water is getting into the oil or other symptoms. If water is being blown out the exhaust pipe or the radiator, that is a serious problem, but you may be able to fix it cheaply! I suggest you go to an auto parts store and buy a "block sealer". It is a liquid that you pour into your radiator. As the sealer leaks out, it will often seal the leak much the the same way that a tire leak sealer does. If that doesn't work, no harm, no foul! Good luck.

You don't give a whole lot of info here, so I'll try to give advice on what you have said. A cracked head is not a real big deal. If your engine is in good shape other than the cracked head, then yes, I would fix it (estimated price is from $300-$500). If your engine has other problems, then you might want to get rid of it. There are a lot of other factors (such as do you like the vehicle or you are really looking to get another car anyway) that affect your decision. If you have less than 100,000 miles on your vehicle and like the vehicle, I would suggest that you get it fixed. Good luck.

If it's a 1977 Chevy G-20 fix it.
If it's a 1985 Plymouth Voyager, get rid of it.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. Most cases a garage will want more to replace a head than the whole motor is worth. So replacing the whole motor may be cheaper.
Call your local garage and see how much it would cost, you never know, and calling to get a quote is free. Then make your decision on whether or not to junk it.....
