Start your paper with some kind of educated theory or prediction for the future of our water supplies and then research and explain that prediction.
You do realize that historically, particularly in famine areas, that many wars have been fought over access to rivers and streams? Without fresh water to drink and tend agriculture, we are doomed.
My personal prediction is that within 100 years, fresh/clean water will sell at a premium price and will be much more expensive than any other resource out there. Even more expensive than energy sources. Why? Because humans, plants and animals need clean water to survive and with continued pollution and increasing consumption, there is less potable water available. Then throw in a few untimely droughts ... it will spell disaster.
Many populated areas depend on local rivers and streams which replenish themselves from mountainous snowfall, but during years in which we have less snowfall, there is obviously less water. This happened in California in the 70s, and severe water rationing restrictions were enforced. Since that time, human population has continued to increase. And by the way, today we are still recovering from the 60s & 70s when huge factories were allowed to dump their chemically toxic waste into our waterways.
On a personal note, it has always bothered me how some people (particularly teenagers) can spend an hour in the shower ... in the USA, hundreds of gallons in one single shower are often wasted right down the drain. In contrast, we see people in countries of Africa and other nations dying because there is absolutely no clean water to be had.
I probably won't be alive to see my prediction (100 years from now) come true, but my son and his children and grandchildren will most likely have some serious days ahead of them if human population around the globe continues to increase thereby increasing consumption and waste, particularly in our country, whilst compounded by global warming.
Anyhow, I hope I've given you a few ideas to explore. Good luck on your paper! :-)

You could talk about the politics of water trade (as a result of freshwater shortage in the US). What are the advantages and disadvantages of water trade. You could talk about why there is a water shortage (clue: water waste in Las Vegas). You could talk about how water sources are limited ( Great Lakes: these are filled with Glacier water which has been polluted and is not a sustainable source of freshwater). You could talk about where freshwater is available: Glacier ice. You could talk about freshwater waster and devastation: Aral Sea ( the sea was drained for irrigation). Hope any of these might spark some ideas for you. When in doubt go through some part of all the following categories: Is there a Freshwater shortage? Why? Where? What can be done? What will happen if nothing is done (use examples from Aral sea disaster). What are the politics of freshwater. Also you should probably mention the pollution that is carried by water in watersheds...watershed management is necessary.

I truthfully have been in this occasion in the past. And after a super sort of thinking and study, i've got realised that circumstances of India is worth being referred to as the appropriate english each and every day in India! maximum critically because of the fact it provide you with type. The each and every day newspaper from TOI has greater pages than the different paper. upload to it the supplements. So basically you wind up analyzing greater, which thereby improves your English and known understanding. If nevertheless you're keen on convalescing your English only, then study editorials of The Hindu, Hindustan circumstances, ny circumstances, The Washington positioned up, all of that are accessible on line for unfastened. Please comprehend that each and all of the newspapers incorporate an identical information, that is only the language, opinion and presentation that differs. In that experience, TOI is maximum appealing. The Hindu has the appropriate editorials, yet aside from that, that is uninteresting and too political.

You could talk about how there are many emergencies these days, like global warming, the energy crisis, and AIDS in Africa, but there is very little talk about something we NEED to survive: water.
