'Quota' - as in, the producers etc. have already made up their minds that they must have 'x' amount of 'x' kind of singers/ personality types they want to promote for the show.
Could this explain why some very capable vocalists were eliminated in Hollywood (for very mysterious reasons), even though they were vocally superior to some of the 'chosen ones'?

I think that they are looking for a more diverse top 24....they don't want all pop, ballad singers, or all country type singers, or all "rock" singers. They want to mix it up. But with that said, they do cut some singers that are much better than those whom make it into the top 24.
They started the whole 12 of each sex, only because they wanted it to be more fair. Because if you didn't, you could end up with like 18 females and 6 males in the top 24. They didn't want to look sexest.

I think it's probable that the producers give the judges some guidance in terms of certain people they would like to retain because it is good TV, whether it has to do with personality, background, human, interest, etc. And they have the right to do so. This is, after all, a television show, and the main purpose is to entertain. If you choose to audition, you should accept that, just as contestants on other reality shows should.

I do agree that some really good people were eliminated...I don't like the fact that there have to be = number of girls and guys, that is just not fair...
I think they do try to eliminate the ones who are already somewhat successfull and I do agree with that...I want ido to be a new star, not someone who is already a pro...love the under "dawg" deal.......I am not all that impressed with many of this years 24...I like the big funny dude with the big hair...he is my bet for this year...I really think he is the only guy who stands out and I love the woman who is the single mom who sounds better than Aretha...she is awesome..it will come down to those two..you heard it here first....!!!!!

Yes and no.
Yes, there was a quota of 12 girls and 12 boys.
No, I don't think they were looking for "certain types" this year...in fact, I'd say this is the most diverse-looking group (both in looks, and vocals) ever!
I mean, look at Miss Commercial with a C--Baylie Whats her name, the one that got cut cuz she forgot her words...
Oh yeah, I much preferred "Tommy" over that creep "Sundance" (not his real name, his real name is Jason)....Sundance has GOT TO GO!

Terri J - If you said that to any idol fan (wheter it is true or not) they would slap you.
Anyway... my opinion is that the only reason some great people got cut (mostly girls) is because there were so many more girls and the judges needed to eliminate them more.
My personal favorite, however has to be the big funny-hair dude who wanted to win and make David Hasselhoff cry - LOL! - he has a great voice too.

I'm not sure if they have already picked the top 12 of each sex-- but I've wondered if it was rigged... it seems like they let a lot of talent go straight out the door and yet keep ppl that aren't very good, but they are completely weird!

I think so, because I am still trying to figure out why they dumped that tall black guy over Sundance( i think that is his name, the short, heavy white guy with the goatee)
