Hey, I’m in 11th grade and I’m starting to think about college and what I want to do. My grades are good they have always been in the 90's my overall average this year is a 95 in 10th grade it was a 93 and 9th it was in the mid 80's. I am also a volunteer at an emergency medical center and have a small job. What are my chances of getting into pre-med?? My Sat grades are 400 for writing, 490 for reading, and 520 for math...

Pre-Med is simply a major, so all you really need to do is get into College, and then you can choose the Pre-Med major once you are there. I only had an 1100 (out of 1600 back then) on my SATs and I was accepted into EVERY school that I applied for (including NYU, USC, TAMU and Spelman). Yes, your scores aren't stellar, but don't assume that means you can't follow your aspirations. I would suggest studying a bit more and re-taking the rest in a few months, if this an option for you. Your extra curriculars and your GPA is good, as well are good - so, you have a good chance of getting into a college. Just keep your eyes set on your goals and forget losers and naysayers (like the 1st guy who posted here!)

First of all you can't major in premed because most colleges don't specify premed as a major. You can be premed and major in any field you wish...some premed students major in Biology, History, Chemistry, Religion, Physics, Psychology, and English to name just a few.

Secondly most medical schools only look at the experiences you have had once you being college, so keep up the volunteer work once you start at a college or university. Your high school level work and experience will basically not be a factor when applying to medical school.

Once you take your first biology, chemistry or physcis course and have an understanding of what these can be like at the college level you will have a greater grasp on whether or not medical school is in your reach.

Put bluntly...your SAT scores suck!!

It will be a tough road to and through medical school for you. I am not saying you will not be able to make it (SAT scores are not everything), but it will be difficult.

Good luck...I hope that some day your family and friends are calling you doctor.
