I think it's both...autistic children sometimes express themselves through art, therefore it is a need. People who have things going on in their lives that they need to escape from sometimes turn to art as an expressive outlet or a place where they can become lost for awhile.
Artists that have a great deal of creativeness and wish to express it in ways that they hope others will appreciate find passion in what they do.
Art itself sometimes conveys messages or meanings to people and that makes them need a piece of art so that they can always look at it whenever they wish, or they could become a fan or follower of a particular artist and feel they needed every piece s/he ever created, thus they are passionate about the artist and their work.
Depends on the person, scenario and situation.

It's a passion. We have always wanted to depict things we see by imitation or drawing. For some of us, our creativity and imagination is outstanding and is something of a passion.

Definitivamente es una necesidad, yo dirÃa que en todos los aspectos, biológica, sicológica, espiritual, etc. También es una pasión porque te tiene que gustar. No puedes crear arte si no estas interesado en el. Tiene que apasionarte porque tiene que haber un tipo de comunicación entre el artista y el arte mismo.
