And how, if there was some kind of mark branded or tatooed onto the slave, did they then prove their citizenship if they ever gained freedom? Did Romans carry ID cards?

Though slaves were often branded or marked in some other way (tattoo, wristband, colors, etc.), this was not really necessary. You could tell the difference between citizens and slaves much in the same way that you can tell between congressmen and homeless people today. Their hair, clothes, shoes, manner of dress, speech, mode of conveyance-all of these things clearly indicated the status and wealth of an individual. And, they couldn't (and still can't) really be faked. A slave could no more afford a chariot and a nice toga than the guy who lives in your dumpster can afford a Mercedes and an Armani suit.

And even if a slave robbed someone to obtain these things, they would be given away the moment they opened their mouths and spoke. Have you ever read Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw? (Or seen My Fair Lady, based on this play?) One's manner of speech instantly indicates one's class, education, and background. And, except for very good actors, this can't be faked at all.
