It's of little importance to the conflict in the Middle East. It's of very great importance in the conflict in Afghanistan, which is in Central Asia.
The poppy is the most lucrative crop Afghan farmers can grow, and the NATO forces in Afghanistan try to stop them growing it, because it feeds the illegal heroin market in the West. However, Afghan farmers tend to feel pretty aggrieved when this happens, as they lose their livelihoods. As a result, Afghan farmers often support the Taliban against NATO.
There is plenty of material on this on the link I've included below, to a think tank which proposes an alternative, legal use for the poppy crop.

It's a means of income for resources for the terrorists to fight the wars. It gets many South East Asians addicted to it, and it takes about 20 years from that point to ruin the person's life completely. Ditto anyone else in any country who gets addicted. See life of Samuel Coleridge.
But drugs is big money, and I think heroin and something beginning with an m, maybe morphine, are also derived from the opium poppy.
So, those who sell the stuff get money for war, and ruin a lot of lives aong the way.
