Well, if you're shy, acting is probably out of the question. But, I am shy infront of large crowds yet I excel at public speaking. It depends, you need to explore different career options.

Many talented, successful and historically treasured actors were actually quite shy. After reading interviews and biographies of these people, it seems that playing a role was a fullfilling experience in that they could be someone outside of themselves. On the otherside of things, to be a successful actor you must have a thick skin and a single mindedness in pursuit of your dream - as I'm sure you know - it is extremely competative, and not always the most gifted people attain success, let alone get enough work to make a living. I would suggest that you read biographies of actors you admire and find out about how they became successful and overcame "shyness". Definitely take acting classes. Acting is "doing"....kind of like a muscle....the more you do it, the more you will grow....AND the more you immerse yourself in your craft, and the roles you are creating and portraying, the less you will be worrying about yourself & your shyness. Being a true actor is such a beautiful opportunity to help people identify with each other & make a human connection. What a gift to the world you may be ! :)

Just get out there and do it. Acting will help you to overcome your shyness. I used to be so shy that I was afraid to order my own food at a restaurant after I started acting it all went away (then again I am so fortunate to work with kind supporting people). Many really good actors are shy. I know this one person who is rather shy and doesn't say a lot but he is one of the best actors I know. I didn't even know that he was shy until I got to know him better. I know that taking the first leap is the hardest step but once you do it you will have the confidence to take on many other difficult situations.

Most actors are shy. When you are on stage, your are not your self. You are a character. That is acting. The more you can go on stage as a character, the less as you, the better you will be.
So, get good at your craft. An easy way to practice this, sounds silly, but sing along to songs you hear. Not just sing, but tell the story. Country songs are best because they are mostly ballads. Tell the story of the song. Pretend like it is a music video and they are filming you.

Amber, most actors are shy, really....they are uncomfortable in crowds and such but they can stand in front of huge crowds and play a part...the key is to think of it that way...when you are on stage you are not you, you are just playing a part. Even the greats say they still get jitters when doing live theater...if you do film, no anxiety, you can always do another take..my daughter is an actress, first perfomance was in 4th grade...she told me she was soooooooo nervous and she ruled out there and continues to...is doing off broadway climbing the ladder...she likes the edge of theater and probably wouldn't do film if she got a sweet deal..go for it girl...you can do it...if you don't try, you will never know...good luck...it's the things you don't do in life that you regret, winners are the ones who try...

Don't start by thinking straight to professional actor. Think small. I would start by "acting" in real life. Such as pretending to be different characters while doing daily things, like talking to the cashier at some store, or the wait staff at a resturant. That'll build up your confidence level to start, go from there.

man, i know so many people that want to b actors but they are shy in front of people. i would say think of a new career if acting is what you have a passion for. i would adive you to join a drama school maybe parttime . it will be stressful and imbarrsing at first becoz you will be acting with people that you dont know, so if i was you i would take a friend or a person that you are familiar with, feel confident as well thats da key. becasue without confidence you aint gotz nofink. all actors have confidence coz dats da key to success. but b careful not to be to overconfident becasue people dont lyk dat, good luk anyway man.

I use to be shy in front of people. I took an oral communications class and from doing it over and over I just got use to public speaking. The more you take drama classes or act at church or local gigs, the more you will get use to the idea.

What you should you do is get into live theatre. Once you perform in front of hundreds of people its so satisfying. U will no longer be as shy. I promise.
Just don't quit if you don't get a role you dislike.
