well for me i talked to friends and got support where i could. i also found venting to be a good process but to channel the stress into a hobby (being physical i took up martial arts). i also found that self thought and meditation as well as stress management helped. It really depends on what kind of trauma you have been through to determine the recovery phases and the return to normality process to go through.

Denial, depression, anger, self-destruction, acceptance, forgiveness -- seems to be an ongoing cycle. Only time, counseling and self-help can get you through it.
