I feel this could possibly be due to torque steering but I am unable to confirm this. Is there a way in which the symptoms could be confirmed. What is the most likely cause and how can it be rectified?

First things first, go check your tyre pressures. In such a small, lightweight car pressure can make all the difference, a low rear will make a car do this.

Second, do you get any shaking? If your steering wheel shakes then your front wheels need balancing. If the car shakes your rear wheels need balancing.

If that's ok, take it to a long straight road. Accelerate to 50 and keep it steady. If the car pulls to the side at constant speed it's front tracking thats out, if it only pulls during hard acceleration it's the rear tracking.

I have an MGF and my mum has an MX-5, both cars have experienced problems similar to what you mention and both times it was poor tyre pressure.

The MX5 won't exhibit torque steer because it is not a front wheel drive car. This car should accelerate straight and true. Perhaps it's an alignment problem?

This is more than likely tracking. A tendency to pull to one side will be exaggerated when you accelerate. Get your tracking checked.
