hi, teams from various european countriesor their topmost leagues qualify for the european championship when they finish the season in a respectable position like top 4. then they can play the european championship the following season. In big leagues like english premier leagueor italian serie the top 4 clubs are chosen but in small leagues like in norway only the top2 or the champs are chosen. these play the European champions league in group and knockout format and help decide the champions of europe

It used to be like this: - The team that wins the championship in a country can participate in the european championship, 2 teams are randomly coupled, one goes through to the next stage, until 1 team remains, that one is European champion.

But, there were some setbacks with this method, for instance 1 year the champions of Italy and Spain (2 of the strongest countries) were coupled in the first round. It was changed, now some countries have 2 or 3 teams in the champions league, champions of weak countries have to play play-offs.

In the champions league 4 teams are in a group, in these groups each team plays all other teams once at home and once away. The top 2 teams in each group advance into the next round in which they are joined in groups of 4 again. I think this goes on until 8 or 16 teams remain, after which 2 teams are coupled playing one game at home and one away. The final is only 1 game, every year played in a different city.

the Champions League is complicated.
The number of teams selected from a league is based on something called the UEFA coefficient.. Spain, England and Italy have a potenital of 4 as they are rated to be the top 3 leagues in the world. Arsenal is a great club and they were 4 in England last year..

I'll add a bit more......

here in Belgium, the team which finishes first goes on to play in the champions league while the second place team qualifies for a playoff spot. One game at home, one game away against a similar team from another country.

this year the Royal Standard of Liege was knocked out by Steau Bucharest
