Probably you want to adress a Chromosome. in the division process the genetic mass of cell appears as rod-shaped structures called chromoses. A chromosome can be formed by two arms that each one is called a Choromatid that are attached to eachother at Centromeres.
When the cell is not in the division process the genetic mass appears as Chromatin that is less dense.
