I believe that it's all about selecting the right agent.

My ex-wife went through this in the early 90's. She is a tremendous vocalist (recording experience, vocal coach, wedding musician, lots of local entertainment experience). We used an extremely reputable agency in Denver. This agency had handled the likes of Kari Russell and other actors who were budding at that time. They were extremely impressed with my wife, and immediately sent her to New York. Their expertise was primarily modeling and acting, and I just don't think they had a clue when it came to singers.
