You have to figure that you'll have a hard time finding skin care and other grooming products. What about religious and cultural activities...?
I'd suggest you focus on tutoring, college entrance preparation, having your child attend one of the competetive city-wide schools your area must have.
the top of a class of 120 is not much...and I speak as a college professor. Focus on being in the top of any school class, preferably a better one than a worse one, on gettign the SATs score high, and on outside activities like sports or volunteering. Not every urban school is a bad one...just make a point of identifying the 2-5 schools in your area that have the best college preparation programs and get your kid into one of those. keep him/her busy with afterschool activities and in social and/or religious organizations. see if the Greek Letter Organizations are active in your area with HS programs. Seek out the Links, Inc.....
I went to a pretty piss poor city school, but through library trips, going to museums, parents who read to me and checked my homework and attended parent-teacher conferences..I had a PhD by the time I was 28. It can be done without running away from home. and in the meanwhile, you can meat with likeminded parents who can join together and promote not only excellence for your child but for theirs too. This is how whole school systems improve...

Affirmative Action made it possible for almost 50 years for minorities to be better represented in hiring, education, etc. Although it gets bashed by the non-minority, non-gay, non-females, aka "angry white men", this has helped level the playing field, even if it may give a black person an advantage over a white person. I can't think of any other advantages, so base your whole research paper on affirmative action.

Schools will surely take this into consideration though. They are smarter than that. I had a meeting before at the Univ of Pittsburgh during my senior year of hs and they had a folder with my info on it. As the counselor talked I glanced at it and they had my rank in school and the number of students in my class as well. If you go find some hillbilly school somewhere with 8 seniors and you are the valedictorian, believe me, they will know. It is a nice thought, but I'm sure this thought has came across many students before you and most schools are probably prepared to deal with students from smaller schools.

Chances are it will help your children get into a good college (that and also considering that they are a non-asian minority, they will have a better chance nevertheless). However, you can't forget that racism still runs rampid in our nation... so your children may face many difficulties in high school... which in turn can deter their chances of getting into that good college.

On the outside, it seems like a good plan...but remember, you may very well face problems being the only black family to move into a white area. Unfortunately, some very racist idiots still exist and will stop at nothing to make your life hell.

Totally rational and logical. Others have followed through with your thinking and have sent their children to excellent colleges. In life, it's best to use whatever is to your advantage. That's how you win.
