i pulled the tranny out of the corsica and put it in the lumina.. it appeared to be exactly the same as well as the engine, just mounted differently but that wasnt hard to work with. well, got it started and it was running good, but when i moved the shift lever through the gears nothing was happening. it sounded like something was spinning (torque converter and flywheel?) but nothing was happening. then, as i was going through the gears again there was a kinda grinding sound as i tried to put it back into park. thats where i stopped. anyone have any ideas? as far as i can tell, they are exactly the same tranny, engine, torque converter and whatever else, there appears to be no external differences.

I think so as long as there both 3 speed transmissions or the same model transmission.

it sounds like the trans is not full with fluid yet. If they appeared to be the same trans, I think they should work. Of course you didn't forget the torque converter bolts right? Make sure it is completely full of trans fluid. This can take a while as the torque converter needs to fill up first and it takes several quarts.

You didn't say which engines are in the cars.
But assuming they are both 4 cyl, they should both have the TH125, which should interchange. Sounds like a low fluid or pressure issue from the symptoms.
