It isn't the CPU that is better, it is the whole system. You want to consider the software that you want to use. You want to consider the whole BOX. You see, in some situations, the AMD 64 will be faster. In other situations the Intel Core 2 Duo will be faster. But then again, the comparison is based on two entirely different motherboards, where the motherboard has made it BEST.
But the difference may be insignificant. So PRICE might be your more important consideration. Why pay DOUBLE for a fraction faster?
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Yes, right now Intel makes the fastest desktop processor available, however, unless you are buying "that" particular CPU ... what do you care ?
Chevrolet makes the fastest American car on the market (the Corvette) ... is that reason enough for you to buy strictly Chevrolet .... of course not . That would be absurd.
They are both excellent & reliable.... and they both manufacture some powerhouse processors.
Keep away from opinions that appear biased.
Look for the power you need in a PC & can afford.
Look for upgrade options available on an AMD vs Intel mainboards.
Look for the best "bang for buck" package in a PC.
Use this link to compare any 2 Intel and/or AMD processors via performance benchmark tests for various applications :
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html
Examine the benchmarks running applications that you may use.
In most cases you will find that the difference in comparable AMD & Intel processors is between 3 % to 9 %... not much really.
Whereas one may be faster in scientific apps the other will surpass that same CPU in mulimedia apps (for example).
I use both brands in a multi PC high end environment & really could not tell you the difference (so far as daily operation) between one or the other.
It remains a personal choice.

E6550. It will perform magnificently and I speak from experience. AMD has yet to perfect their dual cores to compete with Core2 duo. In dual core segment , C2Duo is still the king. But then again , you dont need that much power if your using Internet or watching movies, music. The only reason to get a core2duo is doing things like dvd ripping, rendering and mostly gaming. TAKE AMD, with the money saved get an Ati x2600 pro PCI EXPRESS or atleast a 8500 GT. Believe me you wont regret it.

At a given GHz, Core 2 Duo is slightly faster than Athlon 64 X2 on average and uses less watts, but who runs the average application.

All my current research on the internet (six week span) says Intel is best per dollar spent. The same research says AMD has been best because of heat. Intel changed from speed to band width recently and reduced the heat. Remember this changes, who is best for the $$$, with every new technology release. Intel's technology is just newer than AMD's, (only 3 or 6 months though).

Intel Core 2 Duo reigns supreme (for now!). See http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/07/14/core2_duo_knocks_out_athlon_64/ for the review.

I have the AMD and it is pretty good, was considerably cheaper than the Intel. I have no experience of the Intel but it cannot be that much better for the extra cost.
Perhaps the extra cost is to cover the advertising that Intel do.
