ok we are moving this coming weekend and we have to bc our lease is up. We rent a basement and actually are moving bc its just a ad situation all around. Anyway, it snowed and iced here last weekend and their is like 4 inches on thick ice EVERYWHERE and it look like it is not going anywhere anytime soon with this cold we have. Our door is in the back of the house and we park on the road. we cant move all this stuff on ice and our cars will hardly move what will we do. How can we melt a walk way that long in the ice? Its so hard we cant even break it.

also this house we are renting from we had a falling out with the people above us (they party A LOT and I am pregnant to make a long story short) anyway they act weird if we do anything. I think they should shovel our driveway dont you grr. The walkway is long maybe like 40 plus feet so I think they will act weird if we put stuff on their lawn I dont know.

Buy some rock salt at your local hardware store. Kitty litter (clean!) also works well. Good luck with your move!

What your looking for is called 'ROCK SALT". There are commercial ice controls available in bags at most hardware stores.
Table salt will also work to a much smaller and more expensive degree. Rock salt is a melter, and will destroy plants in the area, but it will do the job. You will have to reapply it several times, so buy a few bags..........one will not do.
If theres a great deal of ice, plan on reapplication every 4 hours.
There will be a point where you will be able to break it up and shovel.
Scatter it by hand to distribute it, not overly generous, as the salted water is effective too.
Don't use cardboard on ice unless your head is harder than the ice..........you'll slip.

You have two solutions if you can't wait for it to melt (the best solution). 1) Buy bags of whatever material your local yard and garden store recommends for melting ice. 2) Buy sand and coat the ice with it to make the traction better.

Also, increase your accident insurance policy.

Rock salt or water softener salt. Lots of it. It will melt the ice and you can move out safely.

Sand the ice to prevent slipping. Normal construction sand for cement work is fine. It does not need to be spread thick just sprinkled.

How long is the walk way?

Try putting down rug scraps to walk on. Or maybe cut up cardboard boxes.
