It seemed safest to us to start preparing the nursery when the baby could be born and survive on his own. I thought it would be heartbreaking for me to prepare it any sooner, and then something happens to the baby, and we come home "empty-handed". We started when I was 8 months pregnant and it was ready by the time my son arrived. We went with animal theme, green and yellow colors for both the nursery and the layette. http://dreamtimebaby.com/froggytales.html (We bought our bedding brand new via ebay for half the price Babies'R'Us were selling it!) I pulled the wall color out of the blanket - light and "happy" green, and it turned out adorable! The only problem I encoutered was that few stores sell unisex color clothing for babies. Everything is either blue or pink, it is difficult to come by a green or yellow outfit!

You can start planning whenever you want, though. Choosing the theme and comparing prices now will make it easier for you later, when you actually are ready to go ahead and put the nursery together.

We decided on a theme pretty early, but we didn't actually start putting it together until about 6 1/2 months. I had some sheets and other small things, but I waited to get the crib and such. Now that the nursery is pretty much done, I'm bored out of my mind! I still have about 9 weeks left and there's not really anything left to do. You can do it whenever you want, just keep in mind that you may wish you had something to do towards the end, when you're just waiting on the baby to come!

You also might change your mind about the nursery theme, especially if you decide to find out the gender of your baby. We went with Classic Winnie the Pooh. It has a lot of green in it but I've been adding pink touches to the room too, so it's not completely gender neutral.

Good luck and congrats on your little one!

I would go ahead and start on it now. I don't see why you should wait if you have the room and the energy to do it.

You could keep it simple with just some wall hangings. Like hanging bright colored stars and moons on the walls and just buying the bedding pieces as separates to match and maybe a pretty border. Or teddy bears. They are usually pretty neutral.

If you plan on not finding out the sex of the baby, then neutral colors are the best, I think. But if you plan to find out what you are having, then I would suggest buying all the big pieces (crib, dresser, changing table, etc) first and waiting until the big ultrasound before you buy a lot of the bedding and decor for the nursery.

There's a lot of stuff out there. Check out some of the sites like Babies R Us and Wal-Mart.

I started my nursery by the time I was 5 months preg. I didn't want to wait that long, but I had extreme morning sickness with both pregnancies. You just don't want to wait too long before you start on it. You never know when baby will decide to come, so get it done early. My first baby was delivered 10 days late, my second baby was delivered 15 days early. So DONT go by the due date!!

Congrats on the baby and good luck!

I already have the crib together and put in the room and i'm 23vvks. I already had the crib though from my daughter vvho is novv 2. I just found out 3vvks ago that vve are having another little girl so i'm starting to decorate and get things set up i'm just doing a little bit at time. i'd rather be prepared then unprepared. You can pretty much start setting things up vvhenever you are vvanting to. My friends are throvving me a baby shovver in sept vvhen i'm 32vvks pregnant so i'll have alot more things then but I plan on having everything completely ready by the time i'm 36vvks, that vvay I dont have to vvorry about doing it later and i can relax and be ready for vvhen the baby comes, I had both of my other children early at 38vvks so you never knovv vvhen you baby vvill decide to come.

I started at 7 1/2 months. I was excited in the beginning as well, but wanted to find out the sex of the baby before I started. Wanted a boy and was blessed with a beautiful little girl. For unisex colors. Look on babysrus.com. They have some really great neutral colors. You can also try target. Burlington Coat Factory has a great selection of items that I think will suit your needs. Congrats and good luck to you. Take lots of pics when the baby arrives. They grow to fast!

Congratulations! The news is still fresh, although you are starting your second trimester, so I would agree with the answerers above that it's best to start after the 7th month. By then you will also be so tired of being pregnant, and this will freshen you up and occupy your mind taking it off little sores you may have by then. :)

As long as it doesn't have trucks or flowers on it, any theme can be considered neutral. Animals, probably, would be your best choice, although I don't see why a girl can't have sports in her room! Go with whatever you like now, and keep in mind that in a couple of years you can always choose a new theme together with your toddler!

Since you are past your first trimester, then I would say anytime you want - especially if you don't want to know the sex of the baby before hand. I had an amniocentesis, so we were sure of the baby's sex. We started the nursery around 5 months. We wanted to make sure all the paint and carpet fumes were gone before the baby came. Winnie the Pooh is a common unisex theme and there is quite a bit out there. Noah's Arc, jungle animals, farm animals, Teddie bears, clouds and stars, Care bears, and Precious Moments are also unisex themes. Congratulations and best wishes.

I think I was 7months when I started mine. I guess because that is when I started getting itchy feet to get it done. I didnt finish until the end of my 9th month. I loved every minute of it and had that nesting feeling to do it and get it done. I really like the blue and chocolate bedding/theme. That is so cute for boy or girl. Babies r us has such a cute selection of different themes and many are unisex. Good luck and CONGRATS!

I'm a mom to 3 and the old folks say it's bad luck to begin a nursery until your 7th month or 8th month. It's up to you. My niece and her husband have been collecting things for babies for years, yet they have no children. Clowns is a good unisex theme, bears, like a zoo theme, Mickey and Minnie, Winnie the Pooh, those are just some.

I started gathering things during my 4th month, but I didn't actually get the crib and other big things until the end of my 6th month. As far a neutral theme I've seen alot of jungle and safari prints that work neutrally. Good luck and congratulations.
