I'm getting a lot of answers suggesting that Native Americans would be better off and that they would have become a civilization. for over 1000 years they made no advances socially or technologically.

Remember the Aztecs WERE advanced and the Spanish wiped them OUT!

WHile this is not going to be a popular answer it is probably the only one that is historically sound. Things would have virtually remained the same. The Indians would never have advanced much without European help. Look at the PREVIOUS 1000 years. If we look at the technology the INdians had in the year 400 it was virtually the EXACT same as that which they hjad in the year 1400. In fact historians do not even consider the American Indian tribes to be a civilization for the following reasons:

1. No permanent structures (no buildings, temples, aqueducts) like the Aztecs, Romans, Incas, Maya, Egyptians, etc...)
2. No officiall written language
3. No formalized government with popular involvement
4. No science or technology to speak of

Sadly we live in an age when we falsely have been taught that the Europeans came here raped the land, killed all the INdians, and destroyed America. What actually happened was that the Indians were living in a different time period while the world was passing them by. Technology was advancing rapidly in Europe and China and even South America. When technology meets the Stone Age, technology always wins. Look at the MExican War and its aftermath. Mexico (or Spain) had been in control of the American Southwest for 200 years and had not figured out how to improve it one bit. California in 1600 was exactly the same as it was in 184000no change. Mexico couldn't figure out what to do with the land. Then the United States fought for it and easily destroyed Mexican forces (winning EVERY single battle) in the Mexican War and afterwards--immediately--California began to blossom like a rose. Technology met the stone age and technology won.

So it appears that education will always triumph over ignorance. Unpopular maybe, but an historical reality.

It seems as if you are quite a bit culturally ignorant.
You cannot say that Native people were not advanced.
To say this suggests that you don't know anything about the people you are talking about.
And Native people were a civilization. You are hanging on stereotypes and racism. And frankly I am disgusted.

Settlers would not have survived in American if it wasn't for the civilization of Native people, they would have starved to death.

Your government was taken from Native beliefs. That is where they learned about democracy and got the idea for the constitution. Know your history.

Native people had ADVANCED agriculture, astronomony etc..

Native people had ADVANCED oral traditions that go back hundreds of thousands of years and are backed up by scientific evidence today.

Native people DID NOT HAVE domestic abuse, rape, drug and alcohol abuse until colonization. Some of these things may have happened once in a while but were dealt with promptly, it was not something one had to worry about. They learned these things from colonizers who committed these acts against them. All but two Native tribes didn't even have any form of brew until colonizers used alcohol to steal Native lands.

Native people respected all of each other. They didn't think of women as less than. In fact most tribes were matriarchies. Women always had equal roles to men. And people with different sexualities were honored and respected, in fact most tribes held a special place for such people.

And Native people weren't at war before colonization. There is a huge history to this myth that you could learn about if you were to become more educated.

Native people used medicine from the Earth to cure their people that pharmeceutical companies today are still discovering.

What Exactly About All These Things is Less Advanced? What About All These Things is Uncivilized?

Please Do Not Spread Such Ignorance and Racism!!!

Oh, and yeah Native people would have been better off without GENOCIDE, CULTURAL GENOCIDE, RAPE, TORTURE, KIDNAPPING, SCALPING, LAND AND CULTURE THEFT, etc...

Um, if by "us" you mean just english, german and laughably the irish (who didn't really do much), you're forgetting the french and the spanish who would of picked up any slack. If you are saying "us" by means of "Europeans", well, the Russians were exploring the Alaskan/NW Canadian region and there is evidence the Chinese made it to South America. If by some miracle no one ever bothered the NE American Indians I'm sure their cultures would have evolved away from warfare and hunting/gathering into a more sedentary, super-tribe kind of state, and the Plains Indians would soon have followed. Bottom line is, they were way behind technologically to compete fairly.

The Native Americans would probably eventually build a strong ship and discover the European lands. Thus, the Europeans would probably be very interested in this new mysterious race of people and would unceasingly try to find out where they came from.

I am an Ogalala Sioux and i know it wouldn't be happily ever after. What I do feel is that this country we live in wouldn't be as damaged as it is now. They wouldn't be confined to the small block of land they do live on now and they wouldn't be surpressed and I'm sure that there wouldn't be such a high rate of diabetes and other illnessess. There is so much that would be different but it's hard to know that until you know our full history before the europeans came over.

Explorers or colonists looking for land do so for profit and because they need or want to leave their country of origin. Usually when they find land, they "claim" it as their own, and either try to make friends with the original inhabitants, or subjugate and kill them. Europeans didn't "found" America, since it was already "found" and belonged to Native Indians. Europeans just took it over gradually, sometimes by means of treaties, more often by subjugation and killing, which of course resulted in retaliation by the Indians. Historically, all countries which have been invaded receive the same fate. The invaders or colonists had the advantage over the aboriginal peoples - they had guns, they brought diseases like the common cold, measles and venereal diseases and organized armies which were effective in wiping out many indigenous peoples. If you look at the histories of any country which was invaded and conquered, you'll find the same modus operandum. Any people from any country which is looking for land to colonize usually brings superior fire-power, diseases and determined fighters to that land, with no respect for the inhabitants. The Europeans introduced the slave trade because they preferred to have an easier life and make captured people from Africa their slaves. Many other people had their slaves in other countries.
Compare this subjugation with South Africa which the Boers and the British invaded, and subjugated the great tribes of that region, treating them terribly and taking away their self respect and human rights.
Eventually this sort of inhumane treatment doesn't survive but it leaves problems and resentments in its wake. Slavery was abolished after the War of Independence in the U.S. but Afro-Americans are still not always regarded as equal to whites. The KKK is even still in existence. The Indians are squashed into reservations and mostly live in poverty. In South Africa, thanks to world opinion and to people like Mandela, Steve Biko and enlightened whites, South Africa now has black majority rule but there is still enmity and resentment.
The Spaniards invaded and conquered the ancient civilization of the Mayas - and the Mayas don't exist anymore.
Colonists of Newfoundland wiped out an entire Indian tribe, the Beothuks.
The country we now know as America would probably be the same today whichever group of people had discovered it and wanted to move in. There were many French and Dutch invaders too, and the Dutch settled in the New York area. Vestiges of the French influence can be seen, for example in Louisiana, where Cajun is still spoken (a dialect of French) and where there is still a French culture. At the time America as we know it was discovered, any country/countries would have used all the above tactics to dominate and subjugate the existing inhabitants.
If America had remained "undiscovered" until today (hardly likely!) then other, emerging superpowers might want to invade. However, this is an illogical hypothesis.
If America had ONLY been invaded by France, or Italy, for example, then Americans would perhaps be speaking French or Italian, like the people of Quebec speak French today. However, America is far too large for just one country to be able to dominate it. Many people from very many countries came to settle - from Sweden, from Holland, from France etc. America started out as colonies, some separated from the rest. Eventually through wars and allied agreements they were all joined up, and to keep people from fighting each other, the most dominant created the "melting pot" idea - that all citizens should forget their allegiance to their countries of origin and regard thmselves as U.S. citizens only.
So the answer to your question is that America would have been the same whoever "found" it . Invaders don't invade to play "nicey-nicey." The dominant language is still English and will continue to be since English is increasingly the language of commerce and trade globally. This is probably because more English speaking armies and powerful settlers arrrived than from other countries -they were the most influential and most powerful.
That's the best answer anyone can give because we can't see into the future or make hypotheses about "what if." Columbus dicovered it, but his countrymen didn't settle. The people who settled did so because of poverty and religious intolerance in their countries of origin.
A large continent will be dominated by one language, even though other countries also settled there. Human nature dictates the largest, most powerful force will subjugate.
If the continent of America had somehow been off the radar until now, (!) then evidently, the Native Indians would have developped high tech. just like any other country. Perhaps if all the Aboriginal Nations had been joined as one - but they weren't, and even so, they weren't immune to diseases we were immune to, and nor did they have guns. They didn't have a chance.
It doesn't say much for humanity that conquering people take away the rights of the people already there.

The Indians would have developed huge "wigwams" where they could bet varying sums of money on games of chance. They would also develope "firewater" and dink to excess. Thus they would become the same drunk casino owners they are today. They would also be under-educated and having to live off the charity of other nations. A leopard can't change his spots, and Indians can't hide the fact that they are LAZY DRUNKS!!!
