One sperm may successfuly fuse with egg nucleus, and that is fertilization.However, a hen may lay fertilized or unfertilized egg depending upon whether fertlization has taken place or not.

Next time you crack an egg look for the tiny black dot that is the thing that needs fertiziing to produce the chick

First you need a daddy chicken.

The egg's shell is only formed when the egg is laid so the sperm can still get through until then.
