STAR question... congrats!
Both are highly imaginative.... the fine line lies where coherence turns into chaos. I am a little more realistic than both.

The line if there is one between genius and insanity is either very slim or non existent. The man the movie a "Beautiful Mind" is based on is considered both. He has an illness which has made him clinically insane, however at the same time he can solve any math problems.
If you are a genius I believe you could be considered insane at the very same time. Have a genius explain an advanced concept to an average person. A genius usually has a hard time explaining things because they think on a different level. Just like an insane person sometimes they even think on the same level as a genius.
A genius is defined as an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art, music, etc
While insanity is defined as a derangement of the mind.
There is a huge room for overlap.

I think we are ALL crazy to be here trying to answer this question. Not even that one who asked this is sane. So there... WE ARE ALL CRAZY!!! to think that we can define that line...LOL...
On a serious note to, the example that comes to mind to try to portray this is a man who choosed to jump offf a bridge to get the experience of the rush of adrenaline... the genius is the one who came up with the bungy (don't know if that is spelled correctly) cord and uses it so that he can live to tell about the rush and the insance is the one who jumps off without the cord and rushes to his death.
don't know if that analogy works but it's the only thing I could come up with to answer this INSANE question.... :)

I believe there is a balance between genius and insanity. All geniuses are kind of insane, admit it.

we call somebody genius because he knows feels expresses creates in a superbe level that ordinary intellectuals cant.
insanity is a different genre, insanity implies something negative , not productive associated desease.
some genius are regarded insane its simply because we couldnt undersatand them.
salvadore dali, great surrealist often called him " I am crazy "
of course this craziness came from his creativity ,not from insanity.

Insanity is basically a state of being where someone's development and personality is being restricted. If someone's state of being is ENHANCED, however (like people who can see HELPFUL angels, suddenly are able to speak several languages accurately, etc.) is that insanity?

I wouldn't call it 'insanity' - rather it is eccentricity. Excessive talent in a particular area is what sets them apart and what ordinary mortals find slightly dsconcerting and they call it eccentricity.Unfortunately, I am one of those who are called eccentric yet without a of shred of talent in any sphere !

when you start using the genius to harm others. Or to harm yourself. That would make sense to me.
