Yes they are excellent vehicles i just sold my 86 300sdl with 296k no problems. I only sold it cause i needed the space and had 8 other cars there at the time. Was not the only one that had to leave. The ones to avoid are the 90-91 350sd/350sdl, the 92-94 300sd and the 95-96 S350 These cars have the 3.5L six that is known as the "rod-bender". For more information go to www.mercedesforum.com and look under "Diesel Discussion" also www.dieselgiant.com is a good site for info.

Diesel engines run forever. I used to have a diesel engine Volvo wagon but had to part with it as it didn't have a plug for the motor and would freeze up every winter. I have a Mercedes that isn't diesel but it is the most reliable car I've ever owned.
An older lady at my church has a '70 diesel Benz that she refuses to part with. It was purchased brand new by her husband. He wants to buy her a new one but she refuses to get a new one because she feels that the new ones are nowhere near the same quality as the old ones. And she's right. As long as the car you're considering has been well maintained by the previous owner(s), you shouldn't have any fears regarding the diesel engine.

Absolutely, these diesels are tanks man. Ive seen mercedes diesel with 500,000 on the clock even without ppl taking care of them. You can literally run these things in the ground.

Yes, the reliability is a great feature, but the running on used veggie oil is the best special feature. You must modify your fuel system before you try it so do your homework first. I just bought an '82 300 SD with 317,000+ (since the odometer is not functioning who knows how many) for $890 and drove it from LA to the Bay Area no problems.

I can tell you I have a friend that drives a '79 diesel mercedes, her grandfathers old car. It has 600 000k on it and the engine and tranny are going strong. I can also tell you that nothing else works in the car, so it isn't exactly the most luxurious of rides.

Yes. I have one. They will run on used cooking oil.The ones before 1990. Watch out for ones made between 1985 and 95,head problems. They will run up to 900,000 miles if maintained
I love blowing away the so called diesel made to day.If it has to have a computer, its not a diesel to me..

depends on price shape wear and tear. A diesel engine is stronger then gas and with proper care will out last a gas engine.

yes doc is right they run on cooking oil which you could get for free in restaurants...but the process is no easy job...its hassle free to buy diesel directly unless you want to save the environment...diesel engines have greater torque than gas engines...and diesel engines dont have spark plugs...
