Not rinsing can cause diarrhea. I wouldn't want to eat at your house and be left with that memory of the experience.

Umm well I have a dishwasher But anyway we have a general household rule that as soon as you're done with your food, you throw the remainings bits away and then rinse all the rest of the food completely off your dish before setting it in the rack to be cleaned or put in the dishwasher later. when things need to be hand washed for whatever reason...I just put soap on it and rinse it out with hot water and use a towel for drying. And I dont understand how you think that's grubby? If its a clean towel and all your doing is drying dishes with it, the dishes should all be clean so I dont get where you think the germs are coming from.

Most effective "cleaning" processes involve rinsing. (Not to be confused with disinfecting a surface - where you might desire to leave a residue.)
I've heard dish detergent residue can cause the runs. I don't know that as a fact though - and not interested in the experiment!
Is is harmful? I doubt it, as the amount is very small. And I will also assume that your friends aren't experiencing the runs, or they would have already stopped this practice.
So they really should rinse just as a good practice in proper cleaning. They needn't waste a lot of water, if washed properly, a quick rinse will suffice.

I don't know if it is actually harmful, but I pour a cup of vinegar in with the last rinse cycle and the dishes come out streak free with no detergent on them.If I don't add vinegar the dishes will have detergent on them still.

Rinse. Rinse well.
The detergent will affect the taste of your food. It can also give you the runs.
