Since being appointed fielding coach six months ago, Rhodes has lifted the standard of South Africa's fielding to exceptional heights. But is this enough to win a World Cup? Even though the team has won a couple of games and tests in the last few months, do you think that great fielding will be that important when most of the batsmen and bowlers haven't shown half the potential Hansie's team did a couple of years ago?

SA's fielding has improved immensely since Jonty took the reins of fielding coach and in a one-day game, every run saved is absolutely vital.

Is fielding alone enough to win the WC? No, it is the combination of fielding, batting and bowling with a pinch of luck thrown in as well. Fielding does however play a bigger part than merely saving runs. Through good fielding, one can place huge pressure on the opposing batsmen and could force them to take risks which lead to wickets. Also, if a good catch or stop is made, it acts as a mini-morale booster and immediately inspires other players to put just a little more effort into their own game.

I have to disagree with your comment that "batsmen and bowlers haven't shown half the potential Hansie's team did a couple of years ago" though.
I do think that the 1999 WC was the better one - with players like Allan Donald, Jonty and the unbelievable leadership of Hansie but the current team is not too far behind.
Shaun Pollock is in the form of his career and along with Ntini, we have the two best ODI bowlers in the world, according to ICC rankings and Glenn McGrath's retirement).
Our batting has looked strong with Smith and AB hitting some form and a strong back-up in Kallis, Gibbs and Mark Boucher (who in my opinion is the best ODI wicket-keeper in the world and one of SA's all-time best).

Jonty can help the cause for the WC by just continuing to do what he has been doing and I gotta say that I'm feeling pretty confident that this time we can bring home the silverware.
Now if only our rugby boys can do the same!

We know that, in an event such as the World Cup, every run counts. So, good fielding is necessary for the Proteas to win the World Cup. But, along with that, their batsmen and bowlers should also perform. Graeme Smith and Shaun Pollock will be the keys to a South African victory. Besides, the Proteas will be pumped up after becoming No.1 in the ODI Rankings.

As you say our fielding is exceptional but no in my opion that will not be enought to even take us to the final never mind win the world cup! our bowlers aren't doing to bad but our batsmen well ja what more can i say. Why is it that our team is only made out of well you can say two batsmen Kallis and Boucher. Prince is not to bad either but why do these playeres always have to come in and save the game. we have got our first two batting pair hardly ever getting any runs.

I miss the team we had with hansie cronje.pat simcocks, fanie de villiers but to name a few. South africa will have to pull up their socks if they want to be apart of the winning circle
