I know that this may be a stupid question but I have always wondered what to say when people ask about what is your family's backdround. Eg. "I am a quater english, half irish etc."
You see I was born in Australia, my parents are from Malaysia but their grandparents are from China. So technically I am fully chinese. Do I still say that I am Malaysian just because my parents were born there?

What do you feel? That is your answer. You didn't mention simply being Australian.

I'd say your like many many other Australians who are in similar situations where they are unsure of their background. I have a friend who's parents and one set of grandparents were born here who still classes herself as Italian. Go with what you feel. It doens't have to be exact.

Its all silly in a way.
I say you should consider yourself whatever country you were born in. If you were born in China, you should say you are Chinese. I was born in America, so i consider msyelf American. Regardless of where your parents or my parents came from-we are a product of our homeland.
