Please give me your ideas on how the average citizen can help in preventing crime, so that we can have a safe Football / Soccer World Cup in 2010.

To Bite Me: The word "common" refers to "of or relating to the community as a whole". Please check your dictionary at home before being judgmental on issues you obviously don't have an opinion on!

Bite Me, i dont think he meant to put it that way (",)...or as you see it. (but one thumb up for you)
Porgie, glad to hear from you. If i could make all the difference in the world...sigh. I think so far jobs are being created preparing for the world cup, that ought to keep a few people busy as well as during the world cup. i mean nothing bad happened to the fellow Africans during the african cup, and they lived near Alex and were very welcome. i'm very excited about it and cant wait for the spectacular event it will be...

It is a huge problem. SA is the no. 1 in the world for violent crime. Bite Me. look at this. In 2006 the murder rate per year per 100 000 people for SA was 47.53. The nearest "contender" was Colombia on 39.33. The US' figure is 5.9.( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_murder_rate ). Do we need to ask what we as common people can do? For sure! - especially since our government is getting more and more apathetic the higher crime figures get.
For me it's not about the world cup in 2010. That far less important than every one of the approximately 50 people people that gets killed DAILY in SA.
So the sooner common people (or, heaven help us, anybody) start doing something, the better.
Much is already being done. All the voluntary neighbourhood watches and private security companies does great work, and I salute every one of those brave men and women.
Common people with their own companies can start anti-crime campaigns. The ANC can't keep dousing the growing public outcries against crime as they recently did with the FNB campaign (in true old soviet fashion).
This Yahoo answers and other similar open forums are great places to add to the public SA voice saying: " We're not gonna take this anymore. South Africa deserves better!"
And of course, in 2009 WE CAN VOTE.

Over here we have stuff like neighborhood watch programs where people start a committee to keep in touch with each other in the neighborhood and report any illegal activity to the police. You can also start youth groups and after school programs and outreach programs for those who have drug addiction and educate everyone in the community about all of those resources.

Hope that helps

I am still to be convinced that the ANC takes the issue of crime seriously. Mbeki ignored it to the point where he was forced to say something and even then his statements were contradictory. His response to the 32000 letters sent to him was appalling " your wasting your time and money." He has had Lekota support him by making sick remarks about crime victims who moved to Australia and in a petulant outburst accuse the Australian Government of being racist. The BBC did a documentary on crime in SA about 10 days ago and again the ANC denounced the BBC as racist. It all smacks of the HIV/AIDS debate where Mbeki had to withdraw because he was being ridiculed by Tony Leon.
The latest excuse and solution of the community not helping the Police and an additional 30,000 Police is absolute junk. In the first place South Africans are amongst the highest tax payers in the World and the ANC are duty bound via International Law to protect the citizens of South Africa.Private security is not replicated anywhere else in the World for ordinary folk so why should the ordinary people put their lives on the line for a Party who are in denial but have Security and body guards protect their every move.As for the additional Police that is a misnomer of the highest order when you consider the current lot are ill trained and have many question marks over their honesty and integrity. Why doesnt Mbeki respond to the many, many claims that Selebi has links to the Mafia and that Nqakula is totally incompetent? Why doesnt he deal with the many ANC MP's who have a criminal record including defrauding Parliament and Social Services? If Mbeki wants the citizens to participate in the fight against crime then he should lead the way and ensure the Public have confidence in the Leaders who are supposed to deal with crime and make it a number 1 priority for the ANC.
However, that is not what is happening and quite frankly Mbeki has his own agenda which is about his ego and so he surrounds himself with "yes" men and remains oblivious to the real problems of South Africa. Last week he took the opportunity in his weekly letter on the ANC site to have a rant about Palestine and Israel when there are so many problems in South Africa that it would be difficult to chose a starting point. It is almost an open secret and has been for years about his excessive use of alcohol and one wonders if he has not succumbed to addiction.Judging from the pictures I saw of him a week or so ago his face looked totally ravaged.
Very long winded but the only solution for South Africans is to vote the ANC out of power but we know they will never give up that power.

"common" South African? Do you have any idea how offensive your question comes across? Are you really that ignorant to believe that SA is the most violent country?

Porgie, You come across as very arrogant. Rather stay where you are!
