First, let's assume that you are trying to go for SPEED, instead of LOW COST. You see, you would not save money by building your own.

You can pretty much pick most of the components on your own, but here are some to consider.
Hard drive - Hitachi or Fujisu or Toshiba
DVD Double Layer Burner - Sony, Plextor

You should avoid certain brands. I have seen many Maxtor hard drives fail.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Ah, the answers would be many and wide-ranging depending on what you want out of teh computer, your budget, etc, etc etc.

My thoughts would be to buy the best, most versatile motherboard you can, and just build up a system around that. That's because I have having to work around a dated motherboard when upgrading at a later date.

Intel Original Mother Board
Intel CPU Dual Core Processor
Hard Disk 400 GB +
Memory 1GB +
LCD 17" Monitor
Wireless Microsoft Keyboard/Mouse
HP/Sony Dual Layer DVD Writer
Memory Card Reader (for SD/MMC/Mini SD Card)

You can but all these things from eBay, very very cheap and you can compare all the specifications at comfort of your home. I always do that.

I wouldn't buy all the parts seperately if i was building a computer from scratch as it cou;ld end up costing more . I did this and i could have bought it cheaper and had 12months guarantee . There are quite afew sites that do brand new built computers and if you ring them they can actually build to your specifications of you state what you want and give them a guide price ..
