The discovery of America with respect to what? The europeans? This is a bitter fact that the concept of discovery is restricted to the westerns. People inhabited America before europeans were there. The why do we consider intrusion of any first european in the continent as discovery of the continent. Discovery should be a universal term with respect to mankind. Just because there was an europen, who possibly was the first european the venture the land doesn't mean that he discovered it. He was not the first human being to be there.

It's really difficult to identify when first footsteps of mankind landed on the continent. But it was definitely far before Culumbus or Amerigo wer there. The so called Red Indians were already there. The Mayans, Tha Nazcas, the Incas... and quite possibly few more racaes which have diminished...

Columbus "re-discovered" Cuba, the Caribbean, Haiti, Columbia, and the Dominican Republic. If you consider those America, good for you. Leif Erickson about 500 years before him found Greenland and "re-discovered" parts of Canada. He was a Viking, which is funny because in his writings he mentions getting his *** beat by Eskimos. It is also possible that the Vikings trekked into Maine and Vermont. You can't discover something that has already been found! Besides, Columbus admits his hunch was based on older maps that he found...who made those maps??? Obviously he wasn't the first "re-discoverer" of anything. Amerigo sailed by and mapped the East Coast of America (Ameriga means Amerigo's [land]).

I shall be able to answer coz i learned it recently for my history test:
Renaissance i.e Complex transitional movement in Europe kindled the spirit of enquiry and research in Europe. The Europeans began to explore the world. They undertook long voyages and discovered many new countries.
Spanish Invasions:
1)COLUMBUS:An Italian by birth he set sail on August 3,1492 to find a new route to the East under the patronage of the Queen of Spain. He landed on an island on October 12,1492.He named it as East Indies and called the natives Indians. It was later found that it was not Asia but a new land now known as America.
2)AMERIGO VESPUCCI:Again an Italian sailor named Amerigo followed Columbus. He confirmed that the new world discovered by Columbus was quite different from Asia.A German geographer later on named this 'New World' as America in honour of Amerigo

The people who discovered America are the people from Asia because in the ice age north America was connected to Asia and the Nomads were just walking along searching for food they didn't even know they were in America. Now those are the first people in America. In my opinion i don't think Christopher Columbus discovered America he was just the first British Pearson. But threes the pilgrims, native Americans,as i said the nomads.that's my story that my teacher told me.

There are different theories leading to the discovery of Americas. One theory is that it was Amerigo Vespucci, probably because he was the first to suggest that Americas were not west indies. And so they named it after him. But Christopher Columbus is credited as the discoverer of the Americas.
