A subdirectory is a directory below another directory. Every directory except the root directory is a subdirectory. In Windows 95 and Windows/NT, subdirectories are called folders.

if you are talking about Linux there all directories are in child and parent forms and each chil is a paren's subdirectory and the main parrent is called teh root .
it's just the same in windows but they are called folders .each folder you make inside another is a subfolder or you may call it sub directory . and the address each folder has is called directory . for example " MYDOCUMENTS/MY PICTURES" is a subdirectory of "MY DOCUMENTS"

You have to know the meaning of "SUB", which is below. A directory is a listing of an item that pertain to a certain subject. That means a sub-directory is, a listing of a particular item under the main item. Example: you have a stereo which will be you item of directory. The cables are a part of the stereo which would be in it's own category underneath the main directory in turn would mean that cables are a sub-directory of the stereo.
