The book is about a family that moves into a haunted house. Don't want to ruin the ending for you, so it's hard to say more.

you can read chapter one here:
http://www.amazon.com/Amityville-Horror-Jay-Anson/dp/1416507698
and In December 1975, George and Kathleen Lutz and their children moved into 112 Ocean Avenue, a Dutch Colonial house in Amityville, a suburban neighborhood located on the south shore of Long Island, New York. Thirteen months before the Lutzes moved in, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. had shot dead six members of his family at the house. After 28 days the Lutzes left the house, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena while living there.

The book is allegedly based on a true story about a haunted house. However subsequent ghost hunter have been unable to detect any signs of haunting at all. I believe the man who was the book's editor has admitted that they made it up, but the author has not.
Not a bad book, but I prefer the exorcist.

House possession, horror based on some true events get ready for a shake up. See the old version before the new, there where a few old sequels after. Make sure you watch it at night and turn of all the lights.
It all about the House and those.......... windows...that look like eyes..

The way I understand is this. A family moved into a house in Amityville Long Island NY and the father went on a rampage and killed his whole family. A priest was involved but to this day he denies anything happened while he was there. (True Story)...
