I've been teaching elementary students how to create 2d games using gamemaker (gamemaker.nl). I want to be able to teach them 3d games, but I need something that's not too painful or math-intensive. Please don't suggest $400 packages! My teaching budget can't handle it!

In Gamemaker 6.0 & 6.1 They Do Have Some 3D options.
If you have a version Before 6.0 You Would Have to Update it to get 3D OPTIONS

Creating a game in 3D is quite a bit different than making it in 2D, as you are most usually required to learn code and know some amount of mathematics due to the three dimensions involved in 3D games. If you want to try something anyway, I would suggest dark basic.

It has a free trial and its rather cheap compared to other things, and has tutorials and pre-made games for you to examine and demonstrate.

Dark Basic is a good fit for what you're looking for. Another good start would be the Torque Game Engine, it's only about $100 I believe for their professional package.
