It can be a number of different things. If you take your truck in, they will be able to look it up for you if you want to do the work yourself.

There are so many sensors on a modern day car that there has to be an easy way to let the driver know if there is a problem.
The check engine light is it. Loose gas cap - light comes on. Bad EGR valve, O2 sensor, transmission sensors, cooling fan wont come on or a tank of bad gas causing a misfire - check engine light.

This orange 'tattle-tail' easy tells you that the engine is working exterior the specifications the laptop video demonstrate gadgets. it ought to be the gas inflicting it to ascertain too plenty oxygen or too little interior the direction of the sensor. there are various stuff which will make this easy come on. as long because of the fact the engine runs gentle and there is not any substitute in overall performance or gas mileage, the fluids are all crowned off and not grimy (replaced at their usual durations), and each thing works, save on. do no longer thoroughly ignore approximately it, notwithstanding it is not something to be alarmed approximately. once you get the pink easy indicating low oil stress or the engine is overheating, this is whilst to drag over as we communicate and swap the ignition off.

did you recently fill it up with fuel before light came on? Pumping fuel while engine running or not putting your gas cap back on tightly is a major cause of check engine lights tocome on on lower milage cars stop in at a local Advance or autozone and they check the light for free.. will also turn it off for free too

My guess is either the gas cap isn't sealed up tightly, or there is an O2 sensor buggin out somewhere. They are fairly simple to change, and AutoZone should be able to isolate the problem for you (free of charge too).

I have the same thing on my 2000 Dakota.. it's most likely an emissions sensor that checks your emmissions and makes sure they are in regulation... unless you live in California, I wouldn't worry about it...
a piece of black electric tape will go a long way in fixing that
