Not only people, all life is prejudiced. When a cat sees a dog, it is prejudiced to this dog. And vice versa.
Brains classify and not only in races. It started with species. Then it became tribes, then nations/ethnicities, finally races.
It is brains' defence mechanism. "That category is likely to be dangerous", it says.
In Africa there is tribalism, in America it is racism because Americans do not divde themselves into tribes but races.
In some countries, they are not as much racist but more nativist- they like people who are born and raised there and do not accept strangers. Parts of Latin America are like that.
In the Balkans it is ethnic- do you remember Bosnia? Or Croatia? I knew a black girl who went to study there and they treated her well, but they would not treat a person from the neighboring country well.
In some countries they do not like people of different religions. It goes on and on. The less educated the person and the less they are exposed to different types of humans, the more prejudiced they are.
In some countries they prefer men and discriminate against women. The brains works better in categories, I guess. Easier.
Generally, it is an instinct programmed deep inside human psyche.

People are racist because they are down-right dumb, period. Racist people literally make me sick. Apparently, their parents/guardians taught them this trash (or someone did) and they go throughout life believing various ignorant stereotypes about the many cultures within our world. For example, you have posts on this service that provoke racism with asking silly questions such as "Which Race is the Most Physically Fit" and what not. People like to talk trash (especially using their computers as a smokescreen to hide their identities), and for some reason or other, get off on this type of cultural/ethnic abuse. It's not only sad to see how ignorant so many people are but just obviously hateful.

Some people have been brain washed or are uneducated and fear what they don't know or understand so they have a problem.
However they do not realise they are showing inferior and ignorant they are.
I have experienced it various times and will continue to however my family taught me about my history and self worth. When someone is I just laugh and tell them How I cherish my beautiful brown skin, I love being black and would rather be then be them. Then sit back and wash the reaction. It just a form of bullying because they have insecurities.
I hope that was helpful remember it takes all kinds thankfully you can choose who you associate with.

There are many reasons why people choose to be racist.
Their parents are, and they pass their views onto the children,
they had a bad experience with a particular race that stem their hatred. The word ignorance plays a great deal in this, the unknown of a group of people is hard for some. It is easier to get to know someone then to act out of fear of what you perceive people to be or do. To be honest at some point in all of our lives we for a moment think of silly things or we might even state them. Correcting whatever the statement or thought might have been by befriending or talking with someone of the particular race can change many things. The willingness to change is were it starts.

I've seen this happen in the animal kingdom wher a lot of dark chickens would peck at the different colored chickens or a group of white chickens would fight the darker ones or where coyote's will fight dogs that gets to close to the pack. Being racist has nothing to do with being ignorant, it has to do with wanting to remain with your own kind and feeling a threat if someone other then our race that might enter your circle. If you had a choice to change your color or culture, chances are you would want to remain the same. Would this be racist to want to remain as you are? I don't think so.

Human beings are, sadly, preprogrammed to adopt an 'Us and Them' attitide towards anyone different; which may have made sense when you were fighting neighbouring tribes for the best patch of land to hunt in, but now makes no sense at all.
Also, some people always have to pick on things they are scared of, and the unknown scares them, ergo, a differnet culture of which they are ignorant will set them off.
I think it's silly - That's why I like the internet, you can usually get to see people's values and ideas before you see any race, looks, disability or culture...

All of these answers submitted so far have validity. But each person expressing racist behaviour does so for their own collection of reasons. The root cause of all these reasons is
1) That people find their identity in belonging to a group.
2) Groups define themselves either by what they are for or what they are against.
3) People outside this group are therefore 'different'.
4) In many people's eyes, difference is threatening and these people get stereotyped.
If something threatens you it is hard to act rationally or logically or reach out to that person - which is the only way of getting to know them.

Racism has been around for thousands of years and will be around for the next thousand. People will always pick on people who are different eg, skin colour, disabilty. Racism is simply a form of bullying. However I dont think that it helps when people play on it, like last week, i accidently bumped into an asian girl in a pub and she accused me of being racist! we have to help ourselves before others to ever begin to get rid of this problem!

Yes OK some are ignorant people - BUT - could it not just be that English people are sick and tired of immigrants coming here for the freebies and some can't even speak English. Some of the immigrants are so rude to people who work in shops you wouldn't believe it was possible.

I don't believe that any1 who has answered this question can honestly say that they have never been racist or held racist views - nobody is capable of treating every1 one equally its impossible!
Sorry its a fact all we can do is try and be tolerant and open minded but its human trait to judge and form opinions just on appearances
