I scanned a poem by George Eliot, "Brother, Sister" I think it was called, in this book I found on my mother-in-law's shelf and now I'm all I'm going to purchase the book.

That depends -- do you think there would be other poems/works in there you would want to read? If not, then I suggest just going for a smaller edition of just George Eliot's works. If you do think you will read more, than by all means, buy a new (or used, if you can't afford it) Norton. I was an English major in school, so I have a whole bookshelf of 'em. They are huge, but a good investment if you love to read.

I'd suggest you check out what's available on-line. Amazon.com often has great prices if a lot of copies are available. Vendors give descriptions and rate the book - sometimes you can get a book new (or close to it) for a fraction of the cost. I've even offered some that are signed below the cover cost.

There are a number of these books (different volumes, editions) - Norton Anthology that is. Check out the ISBN if you can so when you look for it, you'll get the right book.

You might also try www.addall.com or www.fetchbook.info. These sites connect to a number of on-line stores to give you even more choices on where to purchase.

It's a personal preference really. If you like new books better than used books...then okay. But otherwise, go for used copies. There will be multiple editions available. They seem to update anthologies like that every four or five years at least. So you can always try local used bookstores. Since they're used as textbooks...college bookstores often have used copies for sale as well. (I live in a town with several universities, so I'm always seem anthology type textbooks for sale.) You can always look online too at various websites. As an English major, I almost always got used when I could...and I never had a problem with the condition of the books.

that's up to you...Norton Anthologies are just really expensive. I suggust looking through the book and seeing if you like anything else that's in it. If so maybe you can find a used one cheaper. Personally like new books but like I said they are expensive.
