If you are using the works computer to access your e-mail I think they probably do have a right to see what you are doing and are saying during work time. They are paying you to work after all and it is their equipment.

I am not a lawyer, but I think they usually by default can if they have a policy in place, especially if the emails are work related. Most employers ask permanent staff to sign an IT equipment policy which will generally contain a line or two on how the internet, your computer, email address and other company equipment are the property of the company and therefore they can be accessed by the company. Also remember that anything that you send out from your work email address can have repurcussions on your employer, so they have to take the responsibility to be able to screen emails if they need to. However most reasonable employers will not waste their time looking at and reading your personal emails, and if you're concerned someone in IT is doing so my advice would be use your personal email instead of your work one!

No, you have no rights while employed to the privacy of your email, if you choose to view that email on company time on company equipment. Anything that you choose to display on a company computer is subject to view by them. It is their equipment and they are paying you for your time.
Also makes no difference whether you are viewing your official, company-provided email or your personal email account. Networked systems can record and track what is viewed on every computer on the system. If you have stuff you don't want disclosed or are viewing things that are not appropriate in the workplace, don't do it at work.

Whatever email system you use, people can read you emails. No email system is secure.

Whether it is your employer, the person you sent the email to, their colleagues, email systems administrators, auditors, etc. your emails are not secure.

Just assume that anybody can read your emails, and use this to your advantage. When sending messages to one person, send veiled threats to their boss. Also blind copy in yourself at an email address which is not in your internal system.

If a game is played by employers, then it can be played by employees too. You are not paid as an employee to be stupid!

Employers can look at anything you do if its on their computer as you are using their time and resources. Not 100% sure if they can look at your hotmail, yahoo email etc. but if you are using a work email address then yes they are likely to be monitoring everything your sending/recieving, and perfectly within their rights to do so.

It purely depends on the agreement between you and the company.
If there is a mention that anything that is in premisis h/w or s/w during company hours belongs to company means that it belongs to them.
You cannot restrict them to see as you have already signed the agreement.
So in case you want to know better have a look at the employment terms and conditions.

It is your employers computer and Internet connection so they own everything that happens on it.
Any good employer will have a policy about fair use and privacy but someone will always have access to the content to ensure you are not abusing any privileges granted to you.
If you are a unionised workplace check with your union rep.

The thing is employers have every right to read your email, if they areon your outlook at work or any computer at work because during that time it is business hours and you are suppose to be doing business. It's his computer and his office time.

No.
You are wrong.

And its been tested in court in various jurisdiction.

And with all kinds of concerns and image probloems (e.g., people viewing porn while at work) it will get even more so.

I'm not saying that I am in favor. I am just stating the fact about the present situation.
