My last period was on the 23.01.07 and I normally have a 5 week cycle meaning that my next period is due in about a week. Since the 8th of February my breasts have been really aching, full and heavy. They have gone up a bra size! I'm sort of not complaining! My boyfriend and I practice the withdrawal method and he never c*ms inside me. I know this is still not 100% reliable but then no contraception is. I have been using this method for years (only when in long-term rships when both people have been fully screened for STD's) and I've so far never got pregnant. Anyway, I was a little worried about being pregnant, due to the breast pain and I took a test yesterday-I know it's early but I thought that if there was enough symptoms to cause breast pain then there would be enough hcg to show in a test. The test came back negative. Does this mean I definitely am not pregnant? Has anyone else had unexplained breast pain and growth like this?

If you have gotten away with using the withdrawal method of contraception for years and you and your partners have been fertile, then you are lucky in the extreme.

Rationalising this by saying that you use the withdrawal method because no other contraceptive alternative is 100% fool proof is very naive. Over the course of a year, about 20-25% of women using this method of contraception become pregnant. Over 2 years it's 35% and over 3 years, 50%!

You are lucky to have had such disciplined partners! And you are also lucky that it does not seem to quell your enjoyment of sex - most people, after awhile, find the withdrawal method frustrating and unsatisfying for both partners and get tempted to not bother.

But back to your question, if you have returned a negative test and it has been over 14 days since intercourse/probably ovulation then you are probably not pregnant, but not definitely not pregnant, if you know what I mean - breast tenderness is a common nonspecific hormonal condition symptomatic of PMS.

I'd wait until your period was definitely overdue and test again, and if still negative, wait 48 hours and test again. At that point I'd be confident you were not pregnant, but if your period still fails to turn up then see your doctor for some blood work.

But if this pregnancy scare has worried you it might be time to think about a more reliable form of contraception - how does your partner feel about this?

Caffine unfortunately can be the reason. Caffine, along with other toxins can trigger extreme breast tenderness. Have her try to intake a healthy, clean diet with water. If that doesn't work, a natural remedy, Primrose Oil, is also know to help clear horomonal toxins that can cause tenderness in breast tissue. Also, she should see a doctor if the pain is so extreme that nothing helps!

my opinion with be to wait a week like your supposed to and then take a blood test i took 3 home pregnancy test and all came back negative i went and took a blood test and it was positive. but the way i used the same method as you so wait and see. If after that you take the blood test and its negative go to obgyn to get checked better safe than sorry.
