I want to encourage more blooms and leaves. I was thinking of topping it down maybe about a couple of feet. it has been planted for 6 years now and the leaves are becoming less.

Will this cut off the buds for this year if I do this now?

You should of did it earlier in the year, but i don't think it will have much of and efect on the buds thuis year. You might want to trim the dead or the tree limbes that are not producing buds becouse they take alot of the water that the new buds will need. So i think you wont have a problem if u trim at this time.

The best time to prune your cherry tree is between mid summer and mid winter. This will reduce the risk of a problem known as silver leaf.
If your worried about not being able to shape it properly because of all of the leaves in the way, consider marking the branches where they need to be cut with a blob of paint before the leaves appear.
Good luck.

I am not an expert but I do know cherry trees are one of the earliest to blossom, so I would not cut anything now as you are likely to damage the buds. I would wait until the autumn

Best time for tree trimming is during the trees dormant period, winter. Careful which limbs you remove. But thinning usually does a tree good. Forces the tree to put more growth in to fewer limbs and leaves.
