I got those little snap traps that were 4 for $1.49 at Target, baited them with peanut butter, and caught the mouse the first night. For rats, the large snap traps work, but be careful when you set them--they snap hard enough to break a finger.

I would avoid glue traps because it's less cruel to kill them fast than to torture them by having their little feet stuck to the glue.

Tiny critters: Snap traps are fine. But I would cover them with an old milk crate to keep dogs from getting caught. Stake the crate down with rebar, pipe, whatever you have to keep it in place.

Racoons: We tried to use bungee cords to keep the metal cans closed. However, they rolled them around trying to get in and made a racket! Plus they eventually chewed the bungees. Best solution for us was to put the cans up on a wood platform and we bought a $49 electric fence charger! Mounted a weather resistant wall switch and reminder light right on the wall nearby so we could use the cans. The coons quickly learned that other peoples trash was a better deal!

Depends on the rodent. Get a rat sized glue trap. That will catch alot. If the trap disappears then it might be oppossums or racoons. Just need a garbage lock for them.

Be careful setting big traps , you don *t want to hurt pet someones pet.. We poured ammonia over the trash cans to repel coons and possums, but then they started eating the bird seed and we borrowed live traps from the Conservation Dept, trapped them and turned them loose in the wildlife area near where we live.

I had the same problem, I feed them some of my wife's cooking and they haven't been back since. If I had your address I would send you some of her cooking.

clean your cans out really well with amonia. the smell of it burns their eyes and it will keep them away.
