My girlfriend has details of the NHS classes but they are all during the day and my girlfriend wants me to go with her for support. I want to but i don't get paternity leave with my job so it will cost me £80 a day to go to the classes with her. Can we not go after work to an evening class to learn the same things, i'm certian it would be cheaper than taking a day off work every week.

Phone your GP and talk to the midwife. We had evening sessions is Cambs. They are usually quite accomodating.

Surprisingly enough, we feel compelled to go to these classes and yet my husband and I found them no more informative than the books we as all first time parents-to-be read. If nothing else, our ante natal class was comforting because everyone else was just as pregnant as us! They hadn't just had kids, or had a 2 year old or were full of when my baby was born stories etc, etc, but were actually in the same boat as us. We were able to do our classes at night, but really, they are just not worth you losing a days wage for! Maybe you could ask your midwife for the antenatal handouts that you receive in the classes, explaining the situation your in. Anyway, once you've been, you see what I mean???It's just not until you go do you realise that you don't really need to and then ask yourself why they don't have the class for 2nd and 3rd time mothers! (lol) If nothing else, every birth and pregnancy are different. You can only be prepared for so much and if you need an emergency Cesarean, then all the preparation in the world and antenatal classes with that, wont help you! Good Luck.

You should have evening classes available to you. I went to one on a Tuesday evening but in live in Manchester. There are always evening classes available to you and yiu shouldn't have to pay to go privately. Phone her doctor/midwife and they will give you all the info you need. If you want to go privately the cost is approx £95.00 per session or you can go to a one off all day course for approx £250.00. You can also purchase dvd's which will talk you through the whole process inc breathing techniques , birthing positions and ante natal exercises. There is a very good one called Help I'm Having A Baby it costs £15.00 and can be ordered online ncp@babiesdirect.com . It would be nice of you to surprise your wife with this anyway as it guides you through before and after the birth and covers how to handle your baby , bath them , deal with problems , etc. The phone number is 01637 831001 if you cant order online.

The NCT runs ante natal classes that are usually in the evening, but you have to pay for them. They are about £160 for 9 classes, but I think if you are on a low income you can get a discount.
