The radio adapter things are great, but you can also buy (for much cheaper I might add) a cassette adapter. You pop in a cassette tape with a wire you plug into you ipod, and you can listen to your ipod through you cassette player. The music quality is about the same as earphones from apple.

What i would suggest to try is:
Firstly, Do you have a cd player car kit?
If so you can use what connected your cd player to the car stero system (a think its usually a tape system) on your ipod. Or these new Fm transmitters.

I don't know about connecting to a cd player but I have a little am/fm radio thingy for my iPod. You plug it into your ear phone jack plug, set it at a radio station e.g. 87.7fm and then tune your car radio into the same station and the iPod overrides the radio.
